Pay is $23.86 to $31.96 per hour (based on experience) with three shifts that provide 24-hour coverage for the Correctional Facility. Corrections Officers ensure a high- quality correctional facility by providing for the care, custody and control of inmates with supervision in their living areas and ensuring that inmates maintain cleanliness according to established rules and regulations. A high school diploma or equivalency is required as well as the Alert Test at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, Maine Criminal Justice Academy Medical Form and Physical Fitness Test at Kennebec County. Successful candidates will attend an intensive 6-week training program.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Corrections Officer is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of the correctional facility by supervising inmates, enforcing rules and regulations, conducting security checks, and responding to incidents. This role ensures a secure environment for staff, inmates, and visitors while supporting rehabilitation efforts and upholding the standards of professionalism, integrity, and lawful conduct within the facility.

  15. Maintain confidence and protect county by keeping information concerning inmates and county operations confidential.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensures a safe and secure facility by managing the security, in and out processing, transportation, care, and behavior of the facility inmates.
  2. Remains at assigned post until properly relieved by another corrections officer.
  3. Ensures quality inmate activities by preparing, executing, and managing lock downs, head counts, recreation, visits, interviews, medical passes and treatment, dining, education, substance abuse counseling and religious services.
  4. Ensures inmates court appearance by organizing, preparing, executing, and managing transport, maintaining the safety and security of inmates and the public throughout the entire process.
  5. Meets all corrections facility standards by supervising the cleaning and disinfecting of inmate living area and provides necessary linen and supplies.
  6. Takes emergency action when necessary by summoning the Integrated Health Care Provider or other services as necessary.
  7. In emergency situations such as fire or bomb threat ensures inmate safety by organizing, preparing, executing, and managing the evacuation of sections or the entire facility.
  8. Ensures inmates follow required behavior standards by supervising recreation, visiting, dining, religious groups, education, and substance abuse groups and other programs offered.
  9. Ensures Immediate handling of problems by intervening in inmate activity when necessary.
  10. Meets all legal requirements by maintaining accurate logs on all significant activity within the facility. Prepare and deliver written documents.
  11. Ensures inmates abide by facility rules by performing searches of inmates, cells, and the entire facility to prevent contraband from entering the facility.
  12. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational training workshops; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  13. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  14. Supports the county’s safety and health policies by attending required safety training programs; reporting all accidents, and suspected safety hazards to supervisor.
  15. Fulfills job function by participating as an active member in training, participating on county task forces.
  16. Works in harmonious relationships with administration, all county employees, and the community.
  17. It is an expectation to work overtime shifts to fulfill staffing requirements; Overtime shifts are an essential function of the duties; overtime applies to this position and is essential to fulfill staffing requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and to use hands and fingers to operate a standard computer keyboard and computer, as well as mechanical restraints, a flashlight, chemical sprays, nitrile gloves, radio, printer, copier, and telephone.

The employee must be able to physically restrain inmates when necessary, including during emergency situations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

If authorized to use chemical agents and/or a Taser®, the employee must successfully complete annual training in their proper use and handling.

The employee must also receive annual training in suicide prevention, detection, and response procedures.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Sometimes it may be loud due to problems with inmates.

REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR POSITION **:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Capable of physically controlling violent, unruly members of the inmate population.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with people.
  • Successful completion of the Basic Corrections Course – Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA).
  • Successful completion of new recruit class.
